Attraction Introduction

The National Elk Refuge, located northeast of Jackson, Wyoming, covers approximately 9,700 hectares and is one of North America's most important habitats for wild elk. Every winter, between 7,000 and 10,000 elk migrate here from the Grand Teton and Yellowstone areas to overwinter, forming a spectacular sight of deer herds and creating the largest gathering of elk in the United States.

In addition to elk, the refuge is also home to wolves, coyotes, bald eagles, swans, and various birds of prey, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers. In winter, visitors can take horse-drawn sleigh rides deep into the herd, experiencing the stunning sensation of being surrounded by thousands of elk up close. This is one of the most unique winter activities in the Jackson area.

Travel Tips

• Winter (December to March) is the best season for deer watching, with the most spectacular number of deer.

• Sleigh rides require advance reservations, and tickets can be purchased at the visitor center or online.

• During summer, some areas of the reserve are open to the public for hiking or cycling, but the deer population is smaller.

• Please do not get out of your vehicle to chase or feed wild animals, maintain a safe distance, and comply with reserve regulations.
