Attraction Introduction

The Fjellheisen cable car is one of Tromsø's most popular sightseeing experiences. Departing from Tromsdalen, the cable car ascends to the Storsteinen mountain ledge at an altitude of approximately 421 meters, offering panoramic views of Tromsø island, the fjords, mountains, and surrounding islands in just a few minutes. The summit features viewing areas and dining facilities, making it a classic spot for photographing Tromsø's cityscape.

How to Get There

You can walk from Tromsø city center across the Tromsø Bridge to the lower cable car station, a journey of approximately 45 to 60 minutes; alternatively, you can take a city bus heading towards Tromsdalen and get off at the stop near the Fjellheisen lower station, then walk the rest of the way. A taxi ride typically takes about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

Roads may be icy or snowy in winter, so it is recommended to allow extra travel time and wear non-slip footwear. When returning, please check the schedules for the last cable car and bus in advance.

Travel Tips

  • The mountain summit is usually colder and windier than the city center; please bring warm, windproof, and waterproof clothing. Severe weather may cause the cable car to suspend operations, so it is recommended to check the weather forecast and official website announcements before setting off. There may be queues during peak winter periods; if you plan to view the sunset, midnight sun, or Northern Lights, it is recommended to purchase tickets in advance and allow extra time. The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed.
  • Daytime is ideal for enjoying panoramic views of the city and fjord; you can view the midnight sun on summer evenings, and there is a chance to see the Northern Lights on clear, cloudless winter nights. It is recommended to plan your itinerary in conjunction with the weather forecast.
  • You can generally purchase tickets on-site, but due to high foot traffic during sunsets, holidays, and the peak Northern Lights season, booking in advance is more reliable.
