Attraction Introduction

The Great Temple of Abu Simbel is located on the western bank of Lake Nasser. Constructed between 1300 and 1233 BC, the complex comprises two rock-cut temples of different sizes: the Great Temple is dedicated to the gods Ptah, Amun-Ra, and the deified Ramesses II, while the Small Temple is dedicated to the goddess Hathor and Ramesses II's beloved queen Nefertari. Four colossal statues of Ramesses II, each 20 meters high, stand at the temple's entrance. Though weathered by time, they retain their monumental grandeur, representing a pinnacle of ancient Egyptian architectural art.

Travel Tips

• Abu Simbel is about 290 km from Aswan. You can choose to fly from Aswan (1 hour) or drive (about 3-4 hours). It is recommended to plan your trip in advance.

• Every year on February 21st and October 21st, the sunrise illuminates the interior of the temple, shining directly onto the sanctuary. This is the famous "Sun Festival Miracle." It is recommended to check the exact dates and book in advance.

• The temple hosts a nightly Sound & Light Show. It is recommended to check showtimes and book in advance.

• Egypt experiences extremely high temperatures in summer. It is recommended to enter before dawn or visit after dusk, and carry plenty of drinking water.
