St Paul’s Cathedral is one of London’s most iconic religious landmarks, best known for its magnificent dome and distinctive place on the city skyline. The previous cathedral was badly damaged in the Great Fire of London in 1666, and the present building was designed by the English architect Sir Christopher Wren.

Completed in 1711, St Paul’s is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of English Baroque architecture and remains one of London’s most recognisable historic buildings.
Upon entering the cathedral, visitors can admire the central dome, ornate ceiling frescoes, and interior decorations. Those who enjoy heights can climb the stairs to the Whispering Gallery, Stone Gallery, and Golden Gallery to view the cathedral’s interior and the London cityscape from different levels. The Golden Gallery, at its highest point about 85 meters above the ground, offers one of the most unique experiences at St Paul’s Cathedral.

The crypt is also a highlight of the visit, serving as the burial or memorial site for many historical British figures, including Admiral Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington, and the cathedral’s architect, Sir Christopher Wren. Beyond its religious significance, the cathedral has also witnessed numerous important state ceremonies and historical events in Britain.

How to Get There

  • Underground: St Paul’s Station is the nearest station, around a 3-minute walk from the cathedral.
  • Train: City Thameslink Station is around a 4-minute walk away, while Blackfriars Station is around 7 minutes away.
  • Bus: Routes 15, 17, 26 and 76 serve the St Paul’s Cathedral area, with stops just a short walk from the cathedral.
  • Walking: St Paul’s Cathedral is within easy walking distance of the River Thames and Millennium Bridge. The approach from the bridge also offers excellent views of the cathedral’s dome.

Travel Tips

General admission includes access to the cathedral floor, the crypt and the dome galleries. The Whispering Gallery is reached by climbing 257 steps, while the Golden Gallery requires a total climb of 528 steps. There are no lifts to the dome galleries, so visitors with limited mobility should take this into consideration. Large luggage is not permitted.
