Attraction Introduction

Cambridge, located in Cambridgeshire in the east of England, is one of Britain’s best-known university cities, renowned for the University of Cambridge and its history spanning more than eight centuries. Founded in 1209, the university is made up of separate colleges, with buildings, libraries and chapels spread throughout the city. Together, they give Cambridge its distinctive academic atmosphere and historic character. The city has also been home to many influential scientists, writers and thinkers, including Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin.

Among Cambridge’s most recognisable sights are King’s College and its magnificent chapel, Trinity College, St John’s College and the Mathematical Bridge. The colleges feature historic buildings from different periods, with courtyards, cloisters and spacious lawns offering a glimpse into traditional British university life. In the city centre, you can explore the historic Market Square or visit Great St Mary’s Church, where the tower offers views across the university buildings and surrounding streets.

Alongside exploring the colleges, punting on the River Cam is one of Cambridge’s most popular experiences. These traditional flat-bottomed boats offer a leisurely way to admire King’s College, the Bridge of Sighs and the Backs, the riverside grounds behind several colleges. Green lawns, historic bridges and college buildings come together to create some of Cambridge’s most characteristic views, making the city a rewarding destination for a day trip from London.

How to Get There

Train: Direct trains run from London King’s Cross to Cambridge Station, with the fastest journeys taking around 50 minutes. Services from London Liverpool Street typically take around 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes.
Bus: Coach services connect London and Cambridge, with journeys usually taking 2 hours or more, depending on the route and traffic. Local buses serve the railway station, city centre and surrounding areas.
Driving: From London, you can reach Cambridge via the M11, with the drive usually taking around 1.5–2 hours, depending on traffic. Parking in the city centre is limited, so using Park & Ride is recommended: park on the outskirts and take a bus into the centre.
Walking: Cambridge Station is around a 20–30-minute walk from King’s College and the city centre. Most major sights, including King’s College, Trinity College, St John’s College and Market Square, are within walking distance of one another.

Travel Tips

The University of Cambridge is made up of separate colleges rather than a single campus with a main entrance. Admission fees, opening hours and visitor access vary by college, and some only open designated areas to visitors.
King’s College Chapel is one of Cambridge’s most popular visitor attractions, so booking tickets in advance is recommended. Some colleges may restrict access during examinations or major university events.
Punting on the River Cam is a classic Cambridge experience. You can join a chauffeured tour or hire a punt to try it yourself. It can get busy during peak periods, so it is worth checking prices, departure points and what is included before booking.
Cambridge city centre is generally flat and easy to explore on foot, though some colleges have cobbled paths and steps. It can feel chilly on the river, so you may want to bring a jacket for your punting trip.
