Attraction Introduction

Located in the eastern part of Edinburgh's New Town, Calton Hill is Edinburgh's highest point and a popular viewpoint. Two monuments stand on Calton Hill: an unfinished national monument commemorating those who died in the Napoleonic Wars, and the Nelson Monument. Every afternoon at 1 pm, when Edinburgh Castle fires its cannons, the small sphere atop the Nelson Monument is lowered.

How to Get There

  • Walking: Approximately 10 minutes walk from Princes Street
  • Train: To Edinburgh Waverley station, about a 10-minute walk.
  • Multiple bus lines provide access to the city center, from where you can walk uphill.
