Attraction Introduction

The Roman Baths, located in the heart of Bath, are one of the best-preserved and most important Roman sites in the UK. After the Romans arrived in the area in the 1st century AD, they used the natural hot springs to build an extensive bathing complex and temple, which became an important centre for religious and social life.

The Great Bath is the site’s most iconic feature, with natural spring water still flowing into the ancient stone-lined pool today. Visitors can also explore the remains of the Roman temple, bathing rooms, changing areas and drainage systems, as well as archaeological finds including coins, carvings and everyday objects. Together, they offer a fascinating insight into Roman life and bathing culture nearly two thousand years ago.

Today, the Roman Baths are a historic site and museum, and bathing in the ancient pools is not permitted. If you would like to experience Bath’s natural thermal waters, modern spa facilities are available elsewhere in the city. Bath Abbey is located next to the Roman Baths, making it easy to visit both attractions together.

How to Get There

  • Train: Direct trains run from London Paddington to Bath Spa, with a journey time of around 1 hour 20 minutes.
  • Bus: Several local bus routes serve Bath city centre, making it easy to reach the Roman Baths from different parts of the city.
  • Driving: The drive from central London usually takes around 2.5–3 hours, depending on traffic. Parking in Bath city centre is limited, so using a Park & Ride service is often more convenient.
  • Walking: The Roman Baths are around a 10-minute walk from Bath Spa station. Bath Abbey is right next door, and other city-centre attractions such as Pulteney Bridge are also within easy walking distance.

Travel Tips

  • The Roman Baths are one of Bath’s most popular attractions and can be particularly busy at weekends, during school holidays and in summer. Booking your ticket and entry time in advance is recommended.
  • The Great Bath is still fed by natural thermal spring water, but bathing is not permitted. Visitors should also avoid touching or drinking the water.
  • The site includes indoor museum areas and the historic bath complex. Some surfaces are uneven and made of ancient stone, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
