Attraction Introduction

King’s College, located in the heart of Cambridge, is one of the University of Cambridge’s most famous and recognisable colleges. Founded by Henry VI in 1441, it has a history spanning nearly six centuries. Set beside the River Cam, the college is renowned for its magnificent Gothic architecture, elegant courtyards and long academic tradition, making it a popular stop for visitors exploring the city.

Its best-known building is King’s College Chapel, an outstanding example of English Perpendicular Gothic architecture. Construction began in 1446 and continued through the reigns of several monarchs. Inside, visitors can admire the soaring fan-vaulted ceiling, 16th-century stained-glass windows and intricate decorative details. The chapel also houses Rubens’ painting, The Adoration of the Magi, adding to its importance as a place of history, worship and art.

Beyond the chapel, the college’s courtyards, lawns and riverside setting are also worth enjoying. The grounds behind King’s College form part of the Backs, the green spaces stretching along the River Cam behind several colleges. From across the river, the chapel and surrounding buildings create one of Cambridge’s most recognisable views. Punting along the Cam offers another perspective on the college and is one of the city’s most memorable experiences.

How to Get There

  • Train: Direct trains run from London King’s Cross to Cambridge Station, with the fastest journeys taking around 50 minutes. Services from London Liverpool Street typically take around 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • Bus: Coach services connect London and Cambridge, while local buses link the railway station with the city centre. From there, you can continue to King’s College on foot.
  • Driving: From London, you can reach Cambridge via the M11. Parking in the city centre is limited, so using Park & Ride is recommended: park on the outskirts and take a bus into the centre.
  • Walking: King’s College is around a 25–30-minute walk from Cambridge Station, or about 5 minutes from Market Square in the city centre.

  • King’s College Chapel is one of Cambridge’s most popular visitor attractions, so booking tickets in advance through the official website is recommended. Admission generally includes the chapel and designated visitor areas; teaching and residential areas remain closed to the public.
  • The chapel remains an active place of worship and hosts college ceremonies. Visitor access may be restricted during services, concerts or special events, so it is worth checking the opening schedule for your chosen date before booking.
  • Inside the chapel, take time to look up and admire the intricate fan-vaulted ceiling and stained-glass windows. Visitors are asked to keep noise to a minimum and follow the photography rules displayed on site.
  • The college grounds and riverside areas include lawns, paved paths and some uneven surfaces, so comfortable shoes are recommended. Some parts of the gardens behind the college may be closed to visitors.
