Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of the British monarch and one of the city’s most iconic royal landmarks. It serves as the setting for state occasions, official receptions, and major royal celebrations, while its famous central balcony is often used for public appearances during significant royal and national events. For many visitors, it is an essential stop when exploring London.

Originally developed from Buckingham House, the palace became the monarch’s principal London residence during the reign of Queen Victoria. Today, visitors can admire its grand façade and the Queen Victoria Memorial, as well as watch the famous Changing of the Guard ceremony.

Buckingham Palace is not fully open to the public throughout the year. During selected periods, visitors can tour the State Rooms, including the magnificent rooms used by the Royal Family for official occasions and receptions, and see works of art and furnishings from the Royal Collection. Even without an interior tour, the palace exterior, the Mall, and nearby St James’s Park are well worth exploring together, making this one of the best areas in London to experience the city’s royal heritage.

How to Get There

  • Underground: The nearest stations are Green Park, St James’s Park, and Victoria, all within approximately a 10–15 minute walk.
  • Train: London Victoria is the nearest railway station, around a 10–15 minute walk from Buckingham Palace.
  • Bus: Several London bus routes stop along Buckingham Palace Road and in the surrounding area, followed by a short walk to the palace.
  • Walking: Buckingham Palace can be reached on foot from Big Ben, Westminster, or St James’s Park, making it easy to combine with other nearby attractions.

Travel Tips

The Changing of the Guard is a popular event, so it is recommended to arrive at least 30 minutes early to secure a good viewing spot. If you plan to visit the palace interior, it is advisable to book your tickets in advance, as they may sell out. Morning light is particularly good for photographing the palace exterior.
