Attraction Introduction

Westminster Abbey, located in the heart of London near Big Ben, is one of the United Kingdom’s most important historic and royal landmarks. Since 1066, it has been the traditional setting for royal coronations, with 40 monarchs crowned here, including King Charles III in 2023.

With more than a thousand years of history, the abbey is home to the Coronation Chair, royal tombs and numerous memorials to notable historical figures. Poets’ Corner commemorates many celebrated writers, while figures such as Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin are also buried here. The abbey brings together Britain’s royal, religious, cultural and architectural history in one remarkable setting.

Westminster Abbey has also hosted many royal weddings, including the marriage of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1947 and the wedding of Prince William and Catherine in 2011, making it the setting for many significant moments in British royal history.

How to Get There

  • Underground: Westminster Station is the nearest station and is served by the Jubilee, District and Circle lines. It is around a 4-minute walk from the abbey. St James's Park Station is also nearby, around a 6-minute walk away.
  • Bus: Routes 11 and 148 stop near Parliament Square / Westminster Abbey. Several other bus services also operate around Westminster Station.
  • Walking: Westminster Abbey is very close to Big Ben and Parliament Square, making it easy to combine all three in the same walking route.

Travel Tips

Westminster Abbey is a working church, so visiting hours may change due to services or special events. Booking tickets online in advance is recommended. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries require a separate timed-entry ticket. Large backpacks, suitcases and wheeled luggage are not permitted.
