Attraction Introduction

The Tower of London, located on the north bank of the River Thames, is one of London’s most iconic historic landmarks. With a history spanning nearly a thousand years, it has served as a royal palace, fortress, prison, and armoury, witnessing many important events in the history of the British monarchy and the city of London.

One of the most popular attractions is the Crown Jewels, a collection that includes crowns, sceptres, and other ceremonial objects still used on important royal occasions today. The White Tower, at the heart of the complex, is one of the oldest and most recognisable parts of the site and now houses a collection of historic arms and armour.

During your visit, you may also see the Yeoman Warders, commonly known as Beefeaters, dressed in their traditional uniforms. As well as carrying out ceremonial duties at the Tower of London, they lead guided tours and share stories about its royal residents, prisoners, and long history. The Tower is also home to its famous ravens, which remain an enduring part of its traditions and identity.

How to Get There

  • Underground: Tower Hill is the nearest station, served by the Circle and District lines, and is approximately a 5-minute walk from the Tower of London.
  • Train: London Fenchurch Street is around a 5–10 minute walk away. London Bridge is also within walking distance.
  • River Bus: Take a Thames river service to Tower Pier, then walk a few minutes to the Tower of London.
  • Walking: The Tower of London can easily be combined with a visit to Tower Bridge, as the two attractions are very close to each other and work well as part of the same half-day itinerary.

Travel Tips

The Tower of London can be very busy during peak season, so it is advisable to book tickets online in advance and visit as early as possible in the morning. The Crown Jewels are among the most popular attractions, so consider visiting them first after you arrive. Photography is not permitted inside the Jewel House, and Yeoman Warder Tour times vary according to the daily schedule. For photos of the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, morning or late afternoon usually offers softer, more flattering light.
