Attraction Introduction

Tower Bridge spans the River Thames and is one of London’s most iconic landmarks. Officially opened in 1894, the bridge is famous for its two Victorian Gothic towers, distinctive blue suspension elements, and central sections that can be raised to allow ships to pass through. It is one of the classic sights for many first-time visitors to London.

The bridge remains fully operational today. When larger vessels travel along the Thames, the central sections of the bridge are raised to allow them to pass. If your visit coincides with a bridge lift, you can see Tower Bridge from a completely different perspective.

In addition to walking across the bridge free of charge, you can purchase tickets to explore the interior of Tower Bridge. Visitors can access the High-Level Walkways connecting the two towers, experience the glass floors approximately 42 metres above the river, and enjoy views over the Thames and the London skyline. The visit also includes the Victorian Engine Rooms, where you can see the historic steam-powered machinery once used to raise the bridge.

How to Get There

  • Underground: Tower Hill is the nearest station, served by the Circle and District lines, and is around a 7-minute walk from Tower Bridge. You can also take the Jubilee or Northern line to London Bridge.
  • Train: London Bridge and Fenchurch Street are both within walking distance of Tower Bridge.
  • Bus: Several London bus routes serve the area around Tower Bridge, with stops just a short walk away.
  • River Bus: You can disembark at Tower Pier or London Bridge City Pier and walk to Tower Bridge from there.

Travel Tips

Tower Bridge can be busy during peak seasons and at weekends, so it is advisable to book in advance and allow extra time for queues and security checks. Bridge lift times vary, and you can check the official Bridge Lift schedule in advance. If you would like to watch a bridge lift, arrive at the riverside early based on the scheduled time. Large bags and suitcases are not permitted inside the attraction.
