Attraction Introduction

Bath, located in Somerset in south-west England, is one of the UK’s most distinctive historic cities. The city grew around its natural hot springs, with public baths built here during the Roman period, and later became a fashionable spa destination for British high society in the 18th century.

One of Bath’s defining features is its golden Bath stone, which gives much of the city centre a remarkably consistent appearance. The elegant Georgian streets, squares and townhouses, including the Royal Crescent and the Circus, are among the city’s best-known architectural highlights. Bath became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and later formed part of the Great Spa Towns of Europe World Heritage Site.

Bath is also easy to explore on foot. Visitors can start at the Roman Baths and Bath Abbey, continue to Pulteney Bridge, and then walk on towards the Circus and the Royal Crescent. Most of the main sights are relatively close together, making the city well suited to a relaxed half-day or full-day visit.

How to Get There

  • Train: Direct trains run from London Paddington to Bath Spa, with a journey time of around 1 hour 20 minutes.
  • Bus: Local buses connect Bath Spa station with residential areas and nearby attractions. If you are mainly exploring the historic city centre, you are unlikely to need them often.
  • Driving: The drive from central London usually takes around 2.5–3 hours, depending on traffic. Parking in Bath city centre can be limited, so using a Park & Ride service is often more convenient.
  • Walking: Bath Spa station is around a 10-minute walk from the Roman Baths and Bath Abbey. Major sights such as Pulteney Bridge, the Circus and the Royal Crescent can all be easily reached on foot.

Travel Tips

  • Bath’s main attractions are fairly close together, making the city easy to explore on foot. There are some uphill sections around the Royal Crescent, and a few streets have uneven or cobbled surfaces, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
  • Weekends, UK school holidays and the summer months are usually busier, with the Roman Baths being one of the city’s most popular paid attractions. Booking tickets in advance is recommended if you plan to visit.
  • As elsewhere in the UK, the weather in Bath can change quickly, with sunshine and showers possible on the same day. If you plan to spend a lot of time walking outdoors, it is a good idea to bring a light waterproof jacket or raincoat.
