Attraction Introduction

Barbizon, located on the southern side of the Fontainebleau Forest in France, is the birthplace of the 19th-century Barbizon School of painting. It attracted painters such as Millet and Corot to sketch and create their works amidst the forests and fields, emphasizing natural light and shadow and realistic landscapes. The town is small, with galleries, cafes, and traditional stone houses lining its main street, creating a quiet and artistic atmosphere. Barbizon retains its rural charm while also serving as an important historical backdrop for French landscape painting, making it one of the most artistically significant towns near Paris.

How to Get There

You can take a train from Paris Gare de Lyon to Fontainebleau–Avon station, then transfer to a bus or taxi to Barbizon, a journey of about 15 minutes. By car, it's about an hour from Paris via the A6 motorway. The town is relatively compact, and the main areas can be explored on foot.

Travel Tips

Weekends and holidays are peak times for visitors. Some galleries have shorter opening hours. If you plan to combine this with a hike in the Fontainebleau Forest, comfortable shoes are recommended.
