Oxford, located in south-east England, is one of Britain’s best-known university cities, renowned for the University of Oxford and its history spanning more than eight centuries. The city and university have developed together, with colleges, libraries and churches spread throughout the city centre. Rather than having a single campus, the university’s buildings form an integral part of the city itself.

Oxford’s city centre is home to a wealth of historic buildings, from medieval landmarks to architecture from later centuries. Christ Church, the Bodleian Library, the Radcliffe Camera and the Bridge of Sighs are among its most recognisable sights. Each college has its own history, with distinctive courtyards and chapels, and some buildings have featured in films and television programmes. Together, they make Oxford a popular destination for exploring British history and culture, as well as its academic traditions.

Oxford’s historic centre is compact, and most of its main sights can be explored on foot. Alongside visiting university buildings, you can stroll along the High Street, browse the Covered Market and wander between the colleges to enjoy the atmosphere of a traditional British university city. How to Get There

  • Train: Trains run from London Paddington and London Marylebone to Oxford Station, with journeys typically taking around 1–1.5 hours.
  • Bus: Regular coach services connect London and Oxford, while local buses serve the railway station, city centre and surrounding areas.
  • Driving: From London, you can reach Oxford via the M40. Parking in the city centre is limited, so using Park & Ride is recommended: park on the outskirts and take a bus into the centre. Thornhill Park & Ride is a convenient option when arriving from London.
  • Walking: Oxford Station is around a 10–15-minute walk from the city centre. Most major sights, including the Bodleian Library, Radcliffe Camera, Bridge of Sighs and Christ Church, are within walking distance of one another.

Travel Tips

  • The University of Oxford is made up of separate colleges rather than a single campus with a main entrance. Opening hours, admission fees and visitor rules vary, so please check in advance if you wish to visit a particular college.
  • Christ Church is one of the most popular colleges, so booking in advance is recommended, especially during busy periods. Some historic areas of the Bodleian Libraries are only accessible on a guided tour.
  • Oxford city centre is easy to explore on foot, but some colleges and historic buildings have cobbled paths, steps and uneven surfaces. Comfortable shoes are recommended.
