Route Overview

Wales is an interesting place.

Somehow, this tiny country has more castles per square mile than anywhere else in Europe. Amazingly, 20% of the country is protected by national parks. And oddly enough, their national animal is a dragon! What’s more, it’s filled with delightful coastal villages, incredible Roman ruins, and stunning white sand beaches.

Itinerary

Specific itinerary

D1: London ‣ Cotswolds (via) ‣ Brecon Beacons National Park ‣ Aberystwyth

Leave London behind and head west to the rolling hills of the Cotswolds. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is home to some of England's most beautiful historic villages. Your driver and guide will ensure you get the best photos and hear the most fascinating local stories.

Your first stop in Wales is the "Book City" of Hay-on-Wye, located in the north of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The route then leads to the beautiful Elan Valley and into the Cambrian Mountains. From there, it takes about an hour to reach the pretty seaside town and cultural center of Aberystwyth, where you will spend the next two nights.

D2: Snowdonia National Park ‣ Beddgelert ‣ Harlech Castle ‣ Aberystwyth

Drive north to the mountainous Snowdonia National Park. You will visit the pretty village of Beddgelert, where you can see the grave of the legendary dog "Gelert". Later you will head to Harlech Castle. This formidable fortress was built by King Edward I during his conquest of Wales nearly 800 years ago, and it still stands today overlooking the peaks and sea of Snowdonia. After a fulfilling day in the mountains, you will return to Aberystwyth in the late afternoon.

D3: Aberaeron Town ‣ New Quay ‣ Dinefwr Manor or Carreg Cennen Castle ‣ Laugharne ‣ Tenby

Leaving Aberystwyth, you'll cross the coast of Cardigan Bay, passing through the quaint town of Aberaeron to New Quay. A sandy harbour, whitewashed houses and a connection to Dylan Thomas: this town is one of the most picturesque and interesting in the UK. What's more, you might be lucky enough to spot dolphins and whales.

You then head inland to explore Dinefwr Manor* (Newton House) and its ruined castle before heading to the south coast of Wales to visit Laugharne, where Dylan Thomas spent the last years of his life and wrote his famous play "Under Milk Wood". From here it's not far to Tenby, this charming seaside town will be your next two nights' stay.

*When Diefwr Manor is closed, you will visit Carreg Cennen Castle instead.

D4: Pembrokeshire Coast National Park ‣ St Davids ‣ Pembroke ‣ Tenby

Our final full day in Wales is spent exploring the extreme south-west. You can see some of the most beautiful coastline in the UK in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. This area is stunning and is the birthplace of the patron saint of Wales and the royal dynasty of Twdyr (Tudor in English). You head to the small cathedral city of St. Davids for lunch and time for exploration, then stop in the county town of Pembroke, where you can enter the castle's thick medieval walls.

From here we return to Tenby again for a relaxing evening.

D5: St Fagans ‣ Castle Combe ‣ London

Leaving Tenby in the morning, you'll begin your journey back to London.

You pass through the large industrial cities of South Wales, visiting the outdoor National History Museum at St Fagans (anyone wishing to leave the tour at this point can catch public transport from the museum to Cardiff city centre).

From here, it's time to say goodbye to Wales. You take the Severn Crossing back to England, with one last rest stop at Castle Combe. This gorgeous Cotswold village is perfect for a relaxing stroll among the 16th century ironstone cottages.

From here, you'll return to central London.
