Itinerary
D1: Edinburgh ‣ Cairngorms National Park ‣ Loch Eileen Castle ‣ Loch Ness ‣ Ullapool
You head north across the Firth of Forth to the charming Highland village of Dunkeld. From here you head to the Cairngorms National Park and the ancient pine forests of Rothiemurchus Estate. If time permits, after lunch you will take a walk through the forest and explore the ruins of Loch Eilean Castle. Enjoy panoramic views of Loch Ness as you make your way to the famous loch shore and the village of Dores, where you can do some ‘Nessie’ spotting!
Then head to the shores of Loch Bloom where you’ll spend two nights in Ullapool.
D2: Ardvreck Castle ‣ Achmelvich Bay ‣ Lochinver Fishing Village
Today you will explore the remote North West Highlands and the Assynt Mountains. The area is famous for being the first cropping area purchased by local farmers, the Assynt Crofters Trust. You will immerse yourself in the history of the area and visit the ruins of the 15th century Ardvreck Castle, once a stronghold of the MacLeods of Assynt. This day is filled with stunning views of some of the most ancient landscapes in Europe, the stunning white sandy beach of Achmelvich Bay and the traditional fishing village of Lochinver. You will stay overnight in the picturesque fishing village of Ullapool.
D3: Corrieshalloch Gorge ‣ Bairn Aig Nature Reserve ‣ Applecross ‣ Plockton ‣ Portree, Isle of Skye
As you head south, you'll see the spectacular sight of the River Droma flowing into the Corrieshalloch Gorge.
From here, you'll pass the mountains of the Bairn Aig Nature Reserve and along the picturesque shoreline of Loch Torridon. After lunch at Applecross, you'll take one of Scotland's highest and most exhilarating roads, Bealach na Ba.
In the afternoon you'll stop in 'tropical' Plockton, where you can see palm trees growing along Loch Carron and spend time enjoying the tranquillity its sheltered shores offer. Then head across the sea to the Isle of Skye and the delightful harbour town of Portree.
D4 : Skye Island
Today is a flexible day to explore the Isle of Skye; your driver-guide will ensure you choose a unique route that suits the weather, local activities and your group's interests.
You can head north to the Trotternish Ridge and beyond. Here you’ll find geological wonders such as the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock and the stunning Quiraing Pass. Or your guide might take you back in time and teach you about the legends and tribal culture surrounding Dunvegan Castle, the 13th-century seat of Clan MacLeod.
You return from Portree in the evening.
D5: Eilean Donan Castle ‣ Kintyre Mountains ‣ Ben Nevis ‣ Fort William ‣ Glencoe ‣ Edinburgh
Head south from the Isle of Skye to visit the famous fortress of Eilean Donan Castle. Continuing east through the rugged Kintyre Mountains, you drive through Glengarry and past Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain, before heading to Fort William for lunch.
In the afternoon, you will explore spectacular Glencoe, the scene of the infamous MacDonald massacre in 1692. You will then begin your journey to Edinburgh.
