Route Overview

Queen Victoria loved her holidays. She travelled to Scotland, France and Italy, staying in opulent palaces and princely courts. But there was no place she loved more than the Isle of Wight, a diamond-shaped pearl in the English Channel. Not far from London, it has beautiful beaches, epic white sea cliffs, a warm climate and relics of the Romans, the Normans and both world wars. She inspired travellers from around the world to visit the island; and after more than a hundred years of holidays here, we think it just keeps getting better.

On this tour, you'll visit Osborne House, Queen Victoria's Italianate holiday home. You'll venture out to the seaside to see beautiful cliffs, barren bunkers, and stunning white rock structures. Join this tour and follow in the footsteps of royalty as your guide leads you through Britain's most popular holiday island.

Itinerary

Specific itinerary

D1 : ⚑ London ‣ Portsmouth ‣ Isle of Wight

Get your sunglasses and sunscreen ready as you leave London for the sunny south to the Isle of Wight.

First, you'll travel to the ancient port city of Portsmouth. This bustling place blends modern wonders with centuries of seafaring tales. Head to the top of the 170-meter-high Spinnaker Tower for the best views of the city, the Isle of Wight, and the south coast. Follow the historic harbour path or visit the remains of Henry VIII's tragic warship, the Mary Rose, before heading to Gunwharf Quays with your guide to catch your ferry.

Even if you are not a sea lover, fisherman or ocean dweller, you will still find this ferry enjoyable. The journey takes less than an hour and there are plenty of refreshments on board.

Your first stop on the Isle of Wight is Quarr Abbey, an important religious site. The architecture here is beautiful, a blend of French, Byzantine and Moorish design. In the evening, you arrive in the memorable and quaint village of Shanklin in time for an early dinner. Perhaps it's time to try some seafood?

D2: Isle of Wight

Today you'll explore the unmissable highlights of the Isle of Wight.

You will have breakfast before venturing out to the Yarborough Monument. This is the tallest monument on the island and commemorates the life of a wealthy 19th century earl. You will continue with a photo stop at the beautiful views of the endless green fields of Brading Downs before heading to Osborne House.

Queen Victoria said, “It is impossible to imagine a prettier spot.” We agree. Osborne House was Queen Victoria’s holiday home, and as you explore this Italianate-style building you’ll discover pristine green gardens, ornate golden rooms, and historically fascinating artefacts. After that magnificent man-made wonder, it’s time to check out the Isle of Wight’s most beautiful natural wonder, the Needles. These pointed white chimneys sticking out of the sea are a sight to behold. You can hop on a boat to get up close to them, and then venture out to the old defensive turrets nearby.

Your final stop of the day is the cliffs of St. Catherine's Down. These epic cliffs and green valleys look stunning as the sun begins to set. You will return to Shanklin for dinner.

D3: Isle of Wight ‣ Portsmouth ‣ Winchester ‣ London

The morning has passed since you said goodbye to Shanklin and boarded the ferry back to Portsmouth. Now that you are back on the mainland, we will take you to Winchester, one of England's most historic cities.

However, visiting Winchester is no small feat as there is so much to do here. You can admire the magnificent cathedral, the old mill, the cute cafes and the many museums. Once you have had time to explore this wonderful city, it is time to go home. On the way back home, we will make a short stop at Runnymede, the birthplace of the Magna Carta and a cornerstone of modern democracy, before arriving in London in the evening.
