Route Overview

Edinburgh ‣ Forth Railway Bridge (via) ‣ Port Anstrasse ‣ St Andrews ‣ Falkland ‣ Edinburgh

Explore the ancient Fife, an independent kingdom of the Picts, one of the seven earls of the Kingdom of Scotland. In the 15th century, the coastal city of St Andrews was the seat of the Archbishopric and home to Scotland's first university. The city's "Old Course" is also the birthplace of golf, attracting countless enthusiasts every year. Falkland City is a favorite residence of members of the Scottish Royal Family. The ancient fishing village of Anstrasse is a highlight of this itinerary, offering a contrast to the elegant architecture of other towns and panoramic coastal views.

Itinerary

Detailed Itinerary

You leave Edinburgh and head north to South Queensferry. You'll enjoy views of the Forth Rail Bridge, one of Scotland's greatest man-made landmarks. Then you'll enter the Kingdom of Fife and stop at the traditional fishing village of Anstruthe, where you can explore the ancient cobblestone streets and stroll along the waterfront to the harbor.

From Anstrasse, we continue north to the medieval town of St Andrews. St Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, and legend has it that his remains washed ashore on the Fife coast. St Andrews is also home to the third oldest university in England and a beautiful ruined castle perched on a cliff. The Old Course, the birthplace of golf, is also located in this town. You have approximately two and a half hours to explore this charming town.

After St Andrews, we'll enjoy a pleasant drive through the rolling countryside of central Fife to the Falkland Islands. Falkland Palace dominates this ancient village and was one of the main residences of the Stuarts, the old Scottish royal family. Aside from the palace, the village is simply one of the most beautiful in Scotland, with its array of old cottages and narrow, winding streets.

Leaving the Falkland, we returned to Edinburgh, passing Loch Livingstone, where Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned by her Protestant nobles. Then we crossed the Firth of Forth again back to the city center.
