A comprehensive interpretation of the 2025 UK ETA electronic visa policy: What overseas Chinese need to know when entering the UK
Starting from 2024, the UK will officially implement the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system. This policy brings new changes to the way overseas Chinese and other international travelers enter the UK. The following is important information and time arrangements about the ETA policy to help you plan your trip and ensure a smooth entry.
--What is ETA? --
ETA is an electronic travel authorization for travelers who do not need to apply for a visa to visit the UK for a short period of time. It is similar to the US ESTA or Canada's eTA, which aims to strengthen border security and pre-screen travelers.
It is important to note that an ETA is not a visa, but rather a permit authorising an individual to travel to the UK. The final decision on entry is still made by border officials.

--ETA applicable objects and timetable--
The implementation scope and time of ETA are as follows:
- Phase 1
From November 15, 2024: Qatari citizens can apply for ETA.
- Phase II
From February 22, 2024: Citizens of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates can apply for an ETA.
- Phase 3
Starting from January 8, 2025: Citizens of the following countries and regions need to apply for ETA:
Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, Hong Kong SAR (including British National Overseas passport holders), New Zealand, Singapore, the United States and other eligible countries and regions.
- Stage 4
From April 2, 2025: Citizens of EU and EEA countries, including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, etc., need to apply for ETA.

--The impact of ETA on overseas Chinese--
For Chinese passport holders:
Travellers holding Chinese passports still need to apply for a UK visa and ETA does not apply.
Hong Kong BNO passport holders:
From January 8, 2025, Chinese people holding British National Overseas (BNO) passports will need to apply for an ETA, which is applicable for short-term visits.
Chinese holding passports from other eligible countries:
If you hold a passport from a visa-free country such as Canada, Australia, Singapore, etc., you will need to apply for an ETA according to the above timetable.
--ETA Application Process--
How to apply:
Apply online through the UK government's official website or the 'UK ETA' mobile app.
Required information:
Valid passport/contact information/photo that meets the requirements/answers to travel purpose and related questions
Cost and processing time:
Each application costs £10.
Applications are usually decided within three working days, but in some cases it may be faster.
result:
The approved ETA will be electronically linked to your passport and does not need to be printed, but it is recommended to keep a backup.

--ETA validity period and usage restrictions--
Validity: An ETA is usually valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner.
Length of stay: Travellers holding an ETA can stay in the UK for up to six months at a time.
Entry Permit: Holding an ETA does not guarantee entry and the final decision is made by UK border officials.
--Things to note--
Plan ahead: Travelers are advised to apply for ETA in advance to avoid travel disruptions due to lack of time.
Fill in the information accurately: The passport information provided must be consistent with the passport used during actual travel to ensure that the application is correct.
Transit requirements: If you are only transiting through the UK but not entering, you may also need to apply for an ETA. Please confirm in advance.
Travel expenses: If you are flying to the UK from another country, consider whether there will be additional travel expenses (such as flights and accommodation).
In order to avoid travel disruptions, it is recommended that friends who have travel plans check the official website of the British government as soon as possible to confirm whether their passports require ETA and the application time. We only provide the above information, but cannot guarantee that the information will be updated in real time according to the official website.
