A recognized wonder of the world. Millions of years ago, this area was a vast ocean, which was later transformed into a natural rock formation by tectonic movements and the impact of the sea. The monasteries of Meteora are built atop these precipitous rocks, which is what makes the Meteora monastery complex so unique. The 24 rough, rounded rocks seem to have fallen from the sky, rootless and without foundation, each a mountain peak in itself. These unique monasteries are built high on cliffs, some so large they occupy entire mountaintops, others nestled in narrow crevices. When cloudy or foggy, the monasteries appear to float in the air, and the scene after a snowfall in winter offers a particularly enchanting experience, earning them the nickname "City in the Sky."
