Palace of Holyroodhouse
Located at the end of the Royal Mile in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland, with the stunning Arthur's Seat as its backdrop, the Palace of Holyroodhouse is stunning both inside and out. As the official royal residence of Scotland, where His Majesty the King conducts important official duties, as well as hosting grand events and garden parties, it is also known as Holy Cross Palace.
State Apartments
Stroll through the beautifully decorated State Apartments, famous for their intricate plaster ceilings, historic artwork and magnificent collection of tapestries. Reflecting the different aesthetic tastes of successive monarchs, the range of decoration is impressive. Visit the Throne Room to see where the Knights and Ladies of the Thistle of Scotland attended a special luncheon. Enter the Great Gallery, the largest room in the palace, filled with portraits of the legendary kings of Scotland painted by Jacob de Wet.

These historic apartments were once the residence of the legendary Queen Mary and the site of many dramatic events, including the murder of her Italian secretary. During her short and turbulent reign, Mary lived at the Palace of Holyroodhouse; visit the bedrooms, outer halls and her prayer room.

Opening hours:
The Palace of Holyroodhouse is closed every Tuesday and Wednesday (except July to September) . It will also be closed on some official event days and Christmas Day (December 25).
April to October, Thursday to Monday, 09:30-18:00 (last admission 16:30)
