Jökulsárlón

Diamond Beach

Attraction Introduction

First formed around 1930, Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, which began forming in the 1930s, now covers more than 20 square kilometers and is 200 meters deep, making it the second deepest lake in Iceland. Many films have been shot on location at Jökulsárlón, including *Tomb Raider*, *Batman Begins*, and two James Bond films, *Die Hard* and *The Man from Nowhere*.

The massive icebergs on Vatnajökull glacier continuously break off and melt, creating ice fragments that flow into Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon and are washed ashore by the Atlantic Ocean onto the black sand beach opposite the lagoon. These ice fragments have a certain degree of transparency, and under the sunlight, they shimmer and sparkle, creating a striking contrast with the black sand, like sparkling diamonds. Hence, it is known as Diamond Beach.
