Guide to Northern Lights Hunting from the UK | Iceland or Finland? A Guide to Flights, Holidays, and Mandarin-speaking Tours

FROM THE UK · Northern Lights Travel Guide for UK-based Chinese Speakers

Living in the UK and planning to use your annual leave to see the Northern Lights in Iceland or Finland, but unsure whether to book your flights or your tour first? This guide, designed for the practical scheduling needs of UK-based Chinese speakers, organizes how to coordinate local Chinese-speaking tours, flight arrivals, pre/post-tour hotels, and leave days to help you seamlessly connect your entire trip.

Confirm local tour dates and meeting requirements before finalizing flights. "Aurora hunting from the UK" usually involves flying from the UK to join a local Chinese-speaking tour; tour prices typically do not include international flights or a full-time tour leader from the UK.

When comparing, please calculate the tour duration, total days away from the UK, and actual working days required for leave separately.

Aurora Hunting from the UK: Is Iceland or Finland Right for You?

Start by considering what you want to experience during the day; it is easier to decide this way than by looking at flight prices alone. Neither destination guarantees an aurora sighting, so the way you view them and the actual available nights are equally important.

Comparison Iceland Finnish Lapland
Daytime Expectations Golden Circle, South Coast waterfalls, black sand beaches, glacier lagoons, and optional hot spring experiences. Santa Claus Village, log cabin stays, reindeer, and optional snow activities.
Travel connections Check whether your tour meets at Keflavík Airport or in Reykjavík. Confirm the actual starting city before booking. Arriving in Helsinki alone may not get you to your meeting point.
Holiday planning Compare shorter South Coast tours with longer itineraries covering Iceland’s highlights. Even a short tour requires extra time to reach Lapland and travel before and after the tour.
Best suited to Travellers who want to explore a wide variety of natural landscapes. Travellers who enjoy forest cabins, winter scenery and snow activities.

If your group is travelling from different UK cities, you can book separate flights and meet at the same local meeting point. Joining the same tour does not mean everyone has to fly from the same UK airport.

Flying from London or Manchester: look beyond the airfare

Whether you are travelling from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh or elsewhere, start by comparing UK airports that are convenient for you, then check flights for your dates. Direct routes, flight frequency and fares vary by season, so summer schedules may not apply throughout winter.

Five things to check before booking flights to Iceland or Finland

  • Arrival airport: Make sure your airport is convenient for the tour’s actual meeting point.
  • Arrival time: Allow time after landing for immigration, baggage collection and travel to the meeting point.
  • Total cost: Include any checked baggage, airport transfers and extra hotel nights you may need.
  • Flight connections: Check whether your flights are on one booking, whether you need to collect and recheck your luggage, and what happens if you miss a connection.
  • Return journey: Allow time to travel from the tour’s finishing point to the airport and meet your airline’s check-in requirements.

A cheaper flight may not save you money if it requires an overnight stay near a UK airport, a long train journey or extra parking fees. For families travelling from the UK, a convenient departure airport and fewer connections are also worth considering.

Airlines, schedules and fares are not listed here because seasonal routes can change. Check flight and tour meeting times in the relevant local time zones.

Northern lights in Iceland

Check your tour’s meeting time before choosing your flights

Iceland: airport pickup and joining in Reykjavík are different options

RobinGO’s classic 6-day tour lists a 16:20 meeting time at Keflavík Airport on Day 1. Other options include making your own way to the hotel on Day 1 or joining in Reykjavík on Day 2. Plan your arrival around your selected option: 16:20 is the meeting time, not the recommended flight arrival time.

If you plan to arrive on the same day, ask our team to check your full flight details against the meeting arrangements first. If the timing does not work, consider joining at the hotel or arriving earlier. You should also confirm transport to the hotel, any additional costs and check-in times.

Finland: the tour starts in Rovaniemi, not Helsinki

The Lapland 4-day Chinese-guided tour lists a 10:30 meeting time at Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi on Day 1. If your flight arrives in Helsinki, you will still need to arrange onward travel to Rovaniemi and reach the actual meeting point on time.

For tours starting in the morning, we recommend considering arrival the day before and staying overnight in the starting city. Even if you find an early arrival on the same day, allow time for baggage collection, transfers from the station or airport, and possible delays.

These times are taken from the product pages. Final arrangements depend on your selected departure and tour confirmation. The linked tours start locally; return flights from the UK are not automatically included.

Booking hotels before and after your tour: location and timing matter

Before the tour: check how you will reach the meeting point

Do not choose a hotel based only on its distance on a map. Check transport options, whether the journey is manageable with luggage in winter, and what time you need to leave in the morning. For late flights, check the hotel’s latest check-in time. If you are leaving early, ask about breakfast times too.

Your pre-tour hotel may be different from the hotel used on the first night of the tour. If you would like to stay at the same property, confirm the tour’s hotel arrangements and whether an extra night can be booked. Do not book a hotel based on illustrative product photos.

After the tour: an evening finish may make flying the next day more practical

For Iceland’s classic 6-day tour, the option including the Snæfellsnes Peninsula on Day 6 lists a finish in Reykjavík at approximately 19:00. The early-morning hotel departure for the airport transfer does not include that day’s Snæfellsnes sightseeing. If you want to complete the day’s itinerary, consider staying an extra night after the tour.

The Finland 4-day tour lists a finish at Rovaniemi railway station at 17:30 on Day 4. Finishing at the railway station does not mean you are already at the airport, so plan your onward journey around your actual flight or train departure.

An evening flight is not automatically a suitable connection. Check the tour’s finishing time, transfer duration, check-in requirements and allowance for weather-related delays.

How many days of annual leave do you need for a northern lights trip?

Count the days you would normally work between leaving and returning home. Travel before and after the tour may also fall on working days. If your return flight arrives late, you may prefer to allow an extra day to rest.

The examples below assume you work Monday to Friday, have weekends off and have no additional public holidays. They illustrate how to count leave days; they do not represent confirmed tour departure days or available flights.

Example holiday arrangement Total days away from the UK Working days requiring leave
Arrive on Wednesday; join a 4-day tour from Thursday to Sunday; return on Monday. 6 days 4 days: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Monday.
Arrive on Saturday; join a 6-day tour from Sunday to Friday; return the following Saturday. 8 days 5 days: Monday to Friday.
Arrive on Friday; join a 3-day tour from Saturday to Monday; return on Tuesday. 5 days 3 days: Friday, Monday and Tuesday.

If you work shifts, work part-time or need to travel during school holidays, calculate the dates against your own schedule. Public holidays also vary across the UK, so the same annual leave example will not apply to everyone.

Find a suitable departure before planning your annual leave

When comparing two or three possible departures, write out the full timeline for each: leaving the UK, reaching your hotel, joining the tour, finishing the tour, returning and arriving home. This makes it easier to spot a missing travel day or an overnight stay you still need to arrange.

Budgeting for a Chinese-guided northern lights tour from the UK

A shorter tour can still require an extra day away because of travel connections. When comparing Iceland and Finland, use the same room occupancy and preferred activities to calculate your budget, rather than comparing only the advertised starting prices.

  • Travel within the UK: Trains, transfers, parking or airport hotels before and after your flights.
  • Flights and baggage: Return flights from the UK, plus any necessary connecting or domestic journeys.
  • Your local Chinese-guided tour: The selected departure, room type and any applicable single supplement.
  • Before and after the tour: Extra hotel nights, airport transfers and transport to the meeting point.
  • Spending during the trip: Meals not included, optional activities, and any tips or taxes specified in the tour details.

Add Iceland’s blue ice caves and geothermal bathing, or Finland’s glass cabins and snow activities, according to what you actually want to experience. Staying for several nights does not necessarily mean a dedicated northern lights excursion is included every night, so check each day’s arrangements.

Booking your trip: check the connections before committing

  • Choose your destination and available dates: Note your possible travel dates, group size and preferred experiences.
  • Check local tour departures: Confirm availability, joining and finishing options, accommodation and optional activities.
  • Compare flights at the same time: Share the full flight schedule with our team to check whether the connections work.
  • Book after confirmation: Wait for formal tour confirmation before buying non-refundable flights or booking non-refundable accommodation before and after the tour.
  • Check again before departure: Review flight changes, meeting points, baggage requirements and your tour joining instructions.

FAQs: joining a Chinese-guided northern lights tour from the UK

Will a tour leader accompany us from the UK airport?

The tours featured here meet at the destination and do not automatically include a tour leader departing from the UK. You can arrange your own flights and meet the local group as instructed in your tour confirmation.

If I live in Manchester, do I have to fly from London?

Not necessarily. Check convenient airports and available flights for your dates, then compare the total cost and connections. Include travel to London, the time involved and any extra accommodation, rather than looking only at the difference in airfares.

Can I fly in on the day the tour starts?

It depends on the meeting time and location. For a morning departure, arriving the day before is usually more practical. For a scheduled airport pickup, allow enough time after landing to complete arrival formalities. Share your full flight details to confirm whether your plans work.

Does a Finland 4-day tour require only four days away?

Not necessarily. Four days refers to the local itinerary. Return travel from the UK, reaching the starting city and any necessary overnight stays may require additional time. The number of annual leave days depends on how many of those dates are normally working days for you.

Can I book my own hotels before and after the tour?

Yes. Confirm the meeting and finishing points first, then choose accommodation with convenient transport. If you would like to stay at the same hotel as the tour group, check the confirmed hotel arrangements and whether extra nights can be booked.

Should I book a cheap flight first and find a tour afterwards?

You can research flights first, but if you want to join a particular Chinese-guided tour, we recommend confirming the departure and travel connections before buying non-refundable tickets. A cheap flight may not fit a suitable itinerary.

Will taking more time off guarantee that I see the northern lights?

No. More nights give you greater flexibility, but sightings still depend on weather and natural conditions. Check whether the extra time gives you actual viewing opportunities or is mainly needed for airport connections and free time in the city.
